Everything you need to know about vaping

What is vaping?

Vaping is known as the act “to inhale vapor through the mouth from a usually battery-operated electronic device that heats up and vaporizes a liquid or solid”

Most people think of vaping and associate it to e-liquids or vape juice, but there are also vaporizers that will allow you to vape your dry herb or concentrates. Vaping as opposed to smoking does not have any combustion so the product you are vaping is getting converted into a gas rather than burning all of the harmful chemicals in the products. 

Vaporizers work by heating up the product at a lower temperature to ensure that there is no combustion and that it can deliver a healthier experience over time.

What are vaporizers?

Vaporizers are handheld or desktop electronic devices made to produce vapor without the combustion of the material that you are smoking. 

In order for a vaporizer to work you need to expose that material to heat. This can be done one of two ways, either through convection or conduction neither of which will combust your material. Vaporizers are put together with the bases being: the heating element, heating chamber, power source, vapor pathway, and the mouthpiece. Of course some have more advanced technology than others, but all will have the base of the list above. Now lets see what they all have to offer.  

Heating element 

All vaporizers need to get hot to create vapor, to do so there needs to be a heating element. Most vaporizers will have a metal, ceramic, or quartz heating element. There are rare occasions where a vaporizer will use an external heating source, such as a lighter as used for the Dynavap. 

Heating chamber

The heating chamber is quite simple, this is where you put your material to become hot. Each vaporizer is different as some will be placed directly into the vaporizer and others will be placed in a bullet and then into the vaporizer

Power source

Like most things there needs to be a power source for electronics to work. Vaporizers are no different, they either come as a desktop where they need to be plugged in the entire time or they come as portable where they have an internal battery that can be recharged and is easy on the go. 

Vapor pathway

Once the material is heated up and the vapor is created there needs to be away for it to reach your mouth. This is called the vapor pathway, which is where you will inhale the vapor, which could either be a tube inside of the vaporizer or an external tube. 


Last but not least is the mouthpiece. All mouthpieces differ from vaporizer to vaporizer. They could be glass or plastic, long or short, twistable or not, the list goes on, but every vaporizer will have one. 

How do vapes work?

Usually when smoking you are using a heat source of an open flame which causes the herb to combust. Smoking this way has been done for many years and there is nothing wrong with it, but you are not only inhaling the smoke but also the carcinogens and other by products. When vaping there are two main methods that are used: convection and conduction. 

Convection is using hot air to heat up your product thoroughly and conduction is where the heat source is in direct contact with your product to heat it up. With these two methods you are heating up your product just enough to get vapor but not smoke. This allows the product to deliver a full spectrum of what your product has to deliver from flavor to terpenes.


How to vape?

Vaping is quite easy. There are two main ways to vape. One is the mouth to lung technique and the other is the direct lung technique. What you read is what you do, for the mouth to lung method it involves taking the vapor into your mouth first then inhaling it completely into your lungs. With the direct lung method you draw the vapor directly into your lungs as if going for a deep breath.

The mouth to lung method is better for beginners as it does not give you an intense or powerful hit. This method allows you to pull the flavor out of your material. The direct lung method provides a more intense hit, it pulls the vapor straight to your lungs without allowing it first to sit in your mouth. This method is best for those experienced with using vaporizers or those looking for a powerful hit. 


What can you vape?

There are many different things you can vape including e-liquids, dry herbs, concentrates, and even CBD. There are different vaporizers for each of these products so you will want to make sure you are buying the right one. 

E-Liquids is a liquid that is vaped from an e cigarette and commonly contains nicotine, flavoring, propylene glycol (pg), and vegetable glycerin (vg). Nicotine is also found in cigarettes, but is at a much lower level in the e-liquids. PG and VG do not sound the best, but they are more common than you would suspect. PG is commonly found in flavoring of food products and we see that as a flavoring of E-liquids as well. 

Dry herbs are gaining in popularity as it is a more convenient and tastier way to get your herb without combustion. Vaping dry herb allows you to control everything about your session from temperature setting to draw resistance. Each vaporizer for dry herb is different so make sure you are getting one you love. 

Concentrates / wax is pretty similar to the way in which you would vape dry herb, but of course it is a concentrate instead of a dry herb. There are specific vaporizers for concentrates and some that are made for dry herb but can be used for concentrates. In most concentrate vaporizers you will see a coil as the heat source, when using a vaporizer mainly for dry herb there will be a drip pad where you can put your concentrate on.
